Portland, Ore., restaurant group resets to be more inclusive

Chef Joshua McFadden’s Submarine Hospitality — Portland’s restaurant group comprised of celebrated eateries like Ava Gene’s and Tusk — faced a rude awakening in the midst of the pandemic last year that included a mass exodus of key leaders and being called out on social media by employees who accused the group of creating a toxic work environment. Since then, McFadden has partnered with D&I counselors Apron Equity on creating a more respectful, collaborative and inclusive work culture. “We have to give these things as much thought as buying seasonal produce,” McFadden said.
