Qantas Fined $100M for Selling Tickets on Canceled Flights
The Federal Court of Australia has fined Qantas $100 million for selling tickets on canceled “ghost flights” without informing customers. The airline admitted to breaching Australian Consumer Law by continuing to sell tickets for flights already canceled between May 2022 and May 2024.
According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Qantas also delayed notifying affected passengers and kept flight details visible on its website’s “Manage Booking” page. In total, 86,597 customers were impacted on 70,543 flights. Additionally, over 880,000 passengers faced delays in flight cancellation notifications.
Qantas will also refund around $20 million to affected customers, with domestic passengers receiving $225 each and international passengers getting $450.
ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb emphasized that this penalty sends a strong message to all businesses about the consequences of misleading customers. Qantas has since updated its systems to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
