Ranking the World’s Most Powerful Passports
According to the Nomad Passport Index 2023, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) now holds the position of having the world’s most powerful passport. The UAE soared from 32nd place on last year’s ranking to claim the top spot. This change is attributed to the UAE passport’s visa-free access to 181 countries, the absence of income taxes, and growing global influence. These factors make it highly desirable for individuals aspiring to become global citizens.
The Nomad Passport Index assesses five key factors, each assigned different weightings, unlike other rankings that mainly focus on visa-free travel privileges. These factors include visa-free travel, taxation, dual citizenship, perception, and overall freedom. The UAE passport’s significant jump in ranking reflects its attractiveness due to its tax advantages and the country’s increasing openness to foreigners.
Ranking scores for this year are generally lower than the previous year’s due to changes in how visa-free travel was evaluated. Visas-on-arrival and e-visas were not considered this year, resulting in countries losing ground in this category. Luxembourg, last year’s top-ranked passport, dropped to 174th place in this year’s ranking.
The UAE passport’s rise to the number one position is attributed to its impressive addition of 106 new visa-free countries over the past decade. Additionally, being a zero-tax country has enhanced its appeal. The perception of the UAE has also improved, with an influx of wealthy and renowned individuals relocating there. People have begun to realize the country’s liberal visa policies and welcoming attitude towards foreigners, making it an attractive destination for various ventures, including crypto-based businesses.
Although the UAE passport has achieved top ranking, obtaining Emirati citizenship remains challenging. The government introduced new regulations in 2021, allowing select foreigners, such as investors, doctors, scientists, and intellectuals, to apply for Emirati citizenship, provided they meet specific requirements.
The Nomad Passport Index suggests that more people, beyond digital nomads, are choosing to relocate, with retirees seeking better healthcare and freedom. Canada, typically at the top of passport rankings, experienced a decline in its ranking due to incidents impacting perception and personal freedoms. Countries like Portugal and Mexico have become popular choices for various groups, including retirees, families, and digital nomads. The changing landscape of passport rankings reflects the evolving preferences of individuals seeking new opportunities and improved quality of life.
