AAA Travel has revealed that an impressive 115.2 million Americans are gearing up for winter holiday travel this year. This 10-day travel period is expected to see a 2.2 percent increase in domestic travelers compared to the previous year, making it the second-highest year-end travel forecast since 2000.

Here are the key travel statistics for this winter holiday season:

  1. Driving Domination: Approximately 104 million travelers will opt for road trips to reach their holiday destinations, marking an increase of 1.8 percent compared to 2022. This driving projection is the second-highest on record, following 2019’s record of 108 million road travelers.
  2. Taking to the Skies: AAA predicts that 7.5 million Americans will choose to fly commercially during this holiday season, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 with 7.3 million passengers. Notably, average ticket prices are slightly lower than last year.
  3. Alternative Transportation: Modes of transportation like buses, trains, and cruises are expected to outperform 2019 levels, with four million Americans opting for alternative transportation options over Christmas and New Year’s. This demonstrates a growth from 2022 (3.66 million) and 2019 (3.89 million).

AAA Travel Senior Vice President Paula Twidale commented on the findings, saying, “More Americans are investing in travel, despite the cost, to make memories with loved ones and experience new places.” She also emphasized the importance of planning ahead and considering travel insurance for a smooth holiday journey.

This year’s winter holiday travel forecast reflects the ongoing trend of Americans rediscovering their love for travel and adventure, setting the stage for a bustling and memorable holiday season.
