In the face of increasing anti-Russian sentiment and travel restrictions, several Russian citizens have expressed their worries about traveling abroad and the challenges they face. CNBC Travel interviewed Russians who shared their experiences, concerns, and the impact of negative perceptions associated with their nationality.

Julia Azarova, who left Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine, highlighted the difficulties faced by Russian travelers. Some Russians encounter problems entering certain countries, such as Poland and Georgia, due to geopolitical tensions. Others struggle with limited options for international travel, high airfare costs, blocked credit cards, and challenges in obtaining foreign currency.

Russian travelers, like Lana, shared the apprehension they feel when people ask where they are from. The rise of anti-Russian sentiment has created a sense of anticipation and potential negative judgment. However, Lana mentioned that she has received sympathy and concern from people she has met during her travels in Asia, rather than negative comments.

Anna, another Russian traveler, described the prejudice and stigma she has faced as a Russian abroad, even before the recent geopolitical conflicts. Instances of discrimination, such as being refused service in Polish restaurants due to her Russian guidebook, have led her to hide her nationality. Anna expects that sharing her nationality will become even more challenging after the conflict, fearing negative and aggressive reactions.

Russian journalist Julia Azarova mentioned the internal struggle of feeling guilty despite not personally being responsible for the actions of the Russian government. However, her conversations with foreigners have helped her realize that she is not personally blamed. Through her work, she aims to show a different perspective of Russians who oppose the government and the war.

Russian travelers expressed a desire for people to see them as individuals rather than defined by stereotypes. They emphasized that Russians are diverse and should not be judged solely based on negative news about their country. They want the world to know that many Russians desire peace, suffer from the consequences of geopolitical conflicts, and are not represented by the ruling elite.

Azarova highlighted the ineffectiveness of sanctioning the Russian people to influence Putin, as he is not an elected leader. She expressed skepticism about the potential for change without forceful action. Lana expressed fear about Russia’s current situation and uncertainty about the future, while Azarova has gradually accepted the possibility of never returning to her beloved Moscow.

Russian travelers face challenges and concerns while traveling abroad due to rising anti-Russian sentiment and geopolitical conflicts. They strive to overcome negative stereotypes, emphasize their individuality, and convey that their desires for peace and change are separate from the actions of their government. Despite the uncertainties they face, they continue to hope for a better future.
