Royal Caribbean Cruise Hit by Strong Winds, Forces Unplanned Stop
Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas faced unexpected turbulence Thursday night due to severe weather while sailing from Barcelona to Miami. Near Tenerife, the ship was struck by what the cruise line described as an “unexpected wind,” with speeds escalating from 46 mph to 86 mph within minutes. The sudden force resulted in considerable onboard chaos, scattering merchandise across the Royal Promenade and causing bar bottles to shatter.
Some passengers needed medical assistance due to injuries sustained in the incident. To provide necessary care, the ship made an unplanned stop in Las Palmas, Spain, where several guests were disembarked. Royal Caribbean has not disclosed further details on the injuries or damage to the vessel, though they confirmed the ship continued its route after the medical stop.
Passengers recounted the scene, sharing photos and videos of the aftermath, which showed items strewn across floors. “There was a moment of uncertainty, but once the captain announced what happened, it gave everyone a sense of calm,” said one passenger. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges cruise ships can encounter, particularly during transatlantic journeys.
