Royal Caribbean’s Potential Purchase: A New Chapter for Xanadu Beach Hotel in Freeport, Bahamas?

Before the pandemic cast a shadow over the cruise industry, Royal Caribbean had ambitious plans for Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise giant had set its sights on acquiring the Grand Lucayan resort, envisioning a comprehensive development project that would transform the harbor with a hotel, theme park, shopping precinct, entertainment hub, and a convention center.

Although these plans were shelved amid the industry downturn triggered by COVID-19, recent murmurs suggest that Royal Caribbean is contemplating a strategic move once again. Reports are circulating about the company’s discussions regarding the potential purchase of the Xanadu Beach Hotel in Freeport. Speculation abounds that the cruise line is eyeing the development of a resort and water park on the expansive 40-acre property, possibly as part of a larger master plan for the rejuvenation of the entire Freeport harbor area.

While Royal Caribbean has not officially confirmed these rumors, CEO Michael Bayley hinted at optimism earlier this year. In an interview with a Bahamian media outlet, Bayley expressed being “increasingly optimistic” about the fruition of the Freeport port project. There are also whispers that Royal Caribbean’s subsidiary, Celebrity Cruises, might play a significant role in the unfolding development plans.

Bayley shared, “Our intent is to bring more capacity into Freeport. The first step, which will be in conjunction with others, is investing in improving the port.” Whether this move involves the Xanadu Beach Hotel or unfolds as part of a larger vision for Freeport, the industry eagerly awaits confirmation from Royal Caribbean, anticipating a potentially transformative chapter for this Bahamian paradise.
