Seabourn and Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners Celebrate Historic Naming of Seabourn Pursuit

Seabourn, a leading luxury and expedition cruise line, proudly commemorated the naming ceremony of its newest ship, Seabourn Pursuit, on June 29 at Ngula Jar Island, Australia, in collaboration with the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners.

This historic event marked the first time Traditional Owners have participated in naming a ship, conducted in both English and the Wunambal Gaambera language. The ceremony emphasized sustainability, using a bottle crafted from sugar and coated with island sand to ensure no environmental impact.

The day-long celebration included traditional rituals such as the “jimirri” welcome and smoking ceremony, the vibrant “Junba” song and dance performance, and exchanges of gifts between Seabourn and the Wunambal Gaambera. Guests also enjoyed excursions to ancient rock art sites, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Seabourn’s President, Natalya Leahy, expressed the significance of the occasion: “Today marks a very special event with the christening of Seabourn Pursuit, our newest ultra-luxury purpose-built expedition ship. We are honored to have the Wunambal Gaambera as the ship’s godparents, symbolizing a lasting partnership dedicated to sustainability and cultural preservation.”
