Southwest Airlines, the leading domestic carrier in the United States, has revealed its plans to enhance its presence at Nashville International Airport (BNA) by establishing a new crew base and expanding its gate count. This move solidifies BNA as Southwest’s 12th crew base in the country, slated to commence operations in 2024, initially accommodating approximately 250 pilots and 700 flight attendants. The crew base will play a pivotal role in supporting Southwest’s expanding operations in Nashville, where the airline currently offers 166 daily departures to 57 destinations.

In addition to the crew base, Southwest Airlines will also incorporate four more gates at BNA by the close of 2023, boosting its total to 20 gates. The airline anticipates the completion of the extension of Concourse D, where it operates, by 2025. This strategic expansion mirrors Southwest’s ongoing commitment to Nashville, one of its rapidly growing markets. The airline has been serving BNA since 1986 and has steadily increased its flight offerings and destination portfolio over the years.

Southwest’s Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Watterson, emphasized Nashville’s significance in the airline’s achievements, future growth, and network reliability. The new crew base is designed to enhance flexibility and convenience for both air and ground staff, contributing to Southwest’s operational efficiency.

Nashville International Airport welcomed this announcement from Southwest, citing it as a testament to the valuable partnership between the airline and the airport. Doug Kreulen, the airport’s President and CEO, lauded Southwest’s dedication to safety, service, and innovation, which align with the airport’s commitment to providing an exceptional passenger experience. He expressed pride in being chosen as Southwest’s newest crew base and expressed enthusiasm for supporting the airline’s continued expansion.

The Nashville International Airport is currently undergoing a significant transformation known as New Horizons. This comprehensive construction and renovation initiative aims to accommodate the increasing growth and travel needs of passengers. The plan encompasses the expansion of two concourses, construction of a new air freight facility, enhancements to terminal roadways, and upgrades to the baggage handling system. The New Horizons project, estimated at $1.4 billion, is projected to be finalized by late 2028.
