Swiss suspends most Geneva hub ops due to COVID measures
Swiss (LX, Zurich) has announced that it will suspend nearly all of its flights from its secondary hub in Geneva in response to newly introduced stricter border restrictions, including the requirement for all arriving travellers to present a negative PCR test. “The action is being taken because Swiss’ Geneva services are point-to-point operations that do not generate additional business through a feeder function (as is the case at Swiss’ Zurich hub). Geneva Airport also currently lacks traveller testing facilities,” the airline said. Consequently, the carrier said that until the end of February, it will only connect Geneva with Zurich (13x weekly) and Frankfurt Int’l (daily) to ensure hub connectivity for western Switzerland. It underlined its long-term commitment to Geneva as a secondary hub and said that as soon as travel restrictions permit more travel and demand returns, it will rebuild its point-to-point network from the city. The carrier added that it had also reduced its frequencies from Zurich and currently operates at around 10% of last February’s capacity. easyJet Switzerland (DS, Geneva), which is currently the largest carrier at Geneva by capacity, has not announced comparable cuts.
