Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) celebrated its victory in the Routes Awards Under 5 Million Passenger category at Routes Americas 2024 in Bogota, highlighting its strategic achievements and future aspirations.

In 2023, SYR achieved a remarkable 12% growth in passenger numbers, surpassing its previous record set in 2019 with over 2.8 million passengers. The airport attributes its success to strong partnerships with nine airlines and a strategic approach to route development, connecting to 26 domestic destinations.

SYR’s regional market prioritization and alignment with airline strategies have bolstered its service sustainability. In 2023 alone, the airport saw increased annual departures across 11 routes, successfully integrating Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) and receiving positive community feedback.

Looking ahead, executive director Jason Terreri emphasized SYR’s goal of securing hub connectivity and enhancing nonstop leisure options to meet growing regional traveler demand. A significant boost for the airport is the $100 billion investment by semiconductor giant Micron in nearby Clay, New York, promising to create nearly 50,000 jobs with the construction of the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in U.S. history.

Reflecting on SYR’s achievements, Terreri expressed gratitude for the recognition at Routes Americas 2024: “We were thrilled to have been nominated, but to win was just incredible. It’s been really exciting to see all the hard work and changes we made come to fruition.”

Stay tuned for more updates on SYR’s continued success and strategic developments in air connectivity and regional economic growth.
