Albany International Airport, a historic landmark as the country’s oldest municipal airport, is embarking on a transformative journey of rejuvenation. Envisioned as a $100 million endeavor, this ambitious renovation project, commenced in August 2023, is set to culminate in a comprehensive enhancement of facilities, services, and overall passenger satisfaction, with an anticipated completion date in 2025.

Central to this endeavor is a substantial $60 million grant from the state of New York, which forms an integral component of a broader $230 million initiative aimed at modernizing nine upstate airports. The strategic infusion of funding is poised to not only reshape the airport’s physical landscape but also to elevate its stature as a contemporary gateway and cultural nexus for both Capital Region residents and travelers alike.

This multi-faceted project encompasses a spectrum of improvements designed to cater to diverse traveler needs. The future-forward entranceway and an expanded security checkpoint will streamline the passenger flow, fostering convenience and efficiency. Enriched seating and waiting zones, along with updated conference amenities, are designed to elevate the comfort and functionality of the airport.

Beyond functionality, the project embraces artistic and recreational elements. A public arts area, tailored to engage visitors’ creative sensibilities, and a dynamic children’s play zone will infuse the airport environment with vibrancy. New green spaces and an expanded airside marketplace not only enhance aesthetics but also contribute to a holistic passenger experience.

Commitment to sustainability is also at the heart of this transformation. Integration of a solar array, LED lighting, and a cutting-edge HVAC system aims to bolster energy efficiency and improve air quality, thus harmonizing the airport with modern ecological imperatives.

This project answers the call to address the space constraints and congestion challenges that have emerged over the years, particularly in light of the airport’s role as a critical travel hub, facilitating over a million enplanements annually. The renovation aligns with the airport’s pivotal significance in the regional travel landscape.

Notably, this venture complements a previous modernization initiative concluded in 2020. This precursor project ushered in renovated escalators, updated restrooms, revamped food courts, and a brand-new parking facility.

Philip Calderone, CEO of Albany International Airport, expressed his conviction that the project will not only enrich traveler experiences but also forge value for customers and communities. He extended gratitude to both the governor and the state for their foresight and steadfast support, acknowledging that this endeavor is a collaborative leap toward a more vibrant and functional future for the airport and the surrounding region.
