The Most Instagrammed Destinations for Digital Nomads Revealed

If you had the freedom to work from anywhere, where would you choose? The growing trend of digital nomadism has empowered individuals to break free from the traditional office or work-from-home routine and embark on a life of adventure.

If you envision yourself as a digital nomad, you might imagine a picturesque beach scene, typing away in a shaded café until you’ve cleared your inbox enough to bask in the sun. In this daydream, you might even post a humble and envy-free snapshot on Instagram, using the hashtag #officefortheday, to share your experience with friends back home.

However, a recent exploration of the social media app has revealed that digital nomads aren’t solely flocking to coastal destinations; many are gravitating towards bustling cities.

Researchers at resume.io, a CV building site, analyzed thousands of posts featuring the hashtag #digitalnomad and used geotagged locations to determine the most popular places among this group.

While it’s not a comprehensive overview—considering not everyone documents their lives online or uses English hashtags—it provides insight into the preferred destinations for workers with wanderlust.

Where are digital nomads heading? According to the team at resume.io, the United States is the top location for digital nomads. They discovered over 210,000 posts with the self-identifying hashtag, surpassing any other country.

Statista reports that Americans constitute the largest group of digital nomads worldwide. Hence, it seems that many nomads choose to explore within their own country.

Spain secures the second spot as the most popular country for digital nomads. With the recent launch of an official remote work visa, allowing non-EU nationals to stay for up to five years, Spain is likely to maintain its allure for nomads.

Thailand comes in a close third place, followed by Mexico (although not all locals in Mexico City are thrilled about it) and France.

Which European cities are most popular? The findings do not offer groundbreaking revelations. The cities that dominate the digital nomad Instagram scene are already popular among people in general. New York takes the crown as the digital nomad capital of the United States and North America, while London boasts the most vibrant digital nomad community worldwide.

As of this month, London has accumulated over 20,000 hashtags. Although the city lacks a specific digital nomad visa and faces high rents, its vibrant culture, nightlife, and restaurants attract remote workers seeking a good time.

Paris follows closely behind, with Barcelona and Lisbon rounding out the top choices. Portugal has recently introduced a one-year digital nomad visa, making it an appealing destination for those who have yet to experience the charm of yellow trams, stunning tiles, and grilled sardines. Just remember to be considerate and avoid annoying the locals too much.

With the exception of Athens, which claims fifth place, the top ten digital nomad hubs in Europe are predominantly located in Western Europe. Additionally, with the exception of Funchal in Portugal, all of these cities are national capitals. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, ranking tenth, is the capital of one of Spain’s Canary Islands.

Hidden gems for digital nomads If you’re considering taking the leap into the digital nomad lifestyle, it may be comforting to know that these popular cities offer thriving communities of like-minded travelers.

However, perhaps an abundance of other digital nomads is not what you’re seeking. In that case, it’s worth noting that lesser-known destinations with fewer tagged posts include Madagascar, Uruguay, Ghana, Denmark, Nepal, and Ireland.

Each of these countries had fewer than 10,000 posts. Uruguay is likely to experience an increase in popularity with its new digital nomad visa, providing a smooth transition for those interested in exploring South America.
