The Oddest Items Hotel Guests Leave Behind
Before checking out of your next hotel, remember to double-check the room for forgotten items, as guests often leave behind some bizarre and valuable things. Hotels.com’s annual Hotel Room Innsights Report, released in early September, highlights the strangest items left behind, with insights from over 400 partner hotels worldwide.
Unsurprisingly, dirty laundry tops the list of common forgotten items, followed by chargers, makeup, and toiletries. But the report also reveals some extraordinary finds, including a Rolex, a Birkin bag, and a $6 million watch. Quirky items like a baby chick, a pet lizard, and even two full-leg casts were also left behind, with one hotel noting that 10% of guests forgot their dentures.
Hotels are adapting to assist forgetful travelers. For example, Viceroy Riviera Maya offers a soap concierge, and Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel provides its “Forgot it? We’ve got it!” program, allowing guests to borrow items like sunglasses and handbags from Anthropologie.
The report didn’t stop at forgotten items—it also highlighted unusual room service requests, such as an Evian-filled bathtub for a child, a caviar hot dog, and even a high-five from staff to confirm an order.
Hotels.com’s VP of Global Public Relations, Melanie Fish, noted that these insights have inspired unique services to meet guest demands. Whether you forget your favorite item or request something outlandish, hotels are going above and beyond to cater to travelers. Remember to thank and tip the staff—they’ve seen it all!
