Tokyo’s Narita Airport Expands Infrastructure for Pharmaceutical and Perishable Cargo Handling

Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA), the operator of Tokyo’s primary aviation hub, has unveiled ambitious plans to construct a cutting-edge cargo terminal at Narita Airport (NRT). This state-of-the-art facility, positioned within the south cargo precinct of the airport, is poised to significantly enhance handling capabilities and operational efficiency, particularly in the domains of pharmaceuticals and perishable goods. The new cargo terminal boasts a sprawling total floor area of approximately 25,000 square meters and an impressive annual capacity of about 150,000 tons.

Key Features of the New Cargo Terminal:
Advanced Temperature-Controlled Facilities: In response to surging demand for temperature-sensitive cargo, such as vaccines, pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, and flowers, the terminal will be equipped with advanced facilities and technology. It will encompass four distinct temperature zones catering to various cargo requirements:

Frozen Zone (-20°C)
Chilled Zone (2-8°C)
Room Temperature Zone (15-25°C)
Warm Zone (15-30°C)

A dedicated section within the terminal will be reserved for the safe handling of dangerous goods, encompassing items like lithium batteries and chemicals.

Nippon Cargo Airlines, a prominent Japanese cargo carrier, has entered into a long-term lease agreement with NAA to oversee the operation of the new terminal. Serving as its primary hub for both domestic and international cargo operations, NCA is poised to provide enhanced connectivity and convenience to its clientele. Additionally, NCA will collaborate with other airlines and cargo agents to optimize the facility’s utilization.

Construction Timeline and Investment:
Construction of the groundbreaking cargo terminal is slated to commence in April 2024, with an estimated completion date of March 2026. The project is anticipated to require an investment of approximately 12 billion yen (equivalent to $108 million).

This ambitious project aligns with NAA’s strategic vision to augment Narita Airport’s stature as a global air cargo hub and a pivotal gateway to Japan and the broader Asian region. The new cargo terminal underscores NAA’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the cargo industry while bolstering its role on the international stage.
