Marriott International had a very profitable year in 2022.

With a whopping $61.4 billion in systemwide room revenue, the hotel group is the top-ranked among 10 leading hotel groups globally, according to the 2023 Big Book of Travel Data, released by the travel insurer Allianz and produced in partnership with the IdeaWorksCompany.com.

The other top-ranked hotel groups for 2022, in order of revenue, include:

Hilton Hotels: $41.5 billion
IHG Hotels & Resorts: $25.8 billion
Accor Group: $18.08 billion
Hyatt Hotels Corp: $13.9 billion

Hotel Brand Rankings for 2022
Looked at by individual brand (rather than entire hotel groups), the top-ranked hotel in terms of annual gross room revenue is Hampton by Hilton, which had nearly $10.2 billion in room revenue for 2022. The top 10 in this category however, is dominated by Holiday Inn brands and Marriott-labeled brands, each of which earned three of the top 10 slots.

Additional individual brands that landed in the top 10 for 2022 (listed in order of earnings) include:

Hilton Hotels & Resorts: $9.24 billion
Marriott Hotels: $8.78 billion
Holiday Inn Express: $8.46 billion
Courtyard by Marriott: $7.13 billion
Sheraton: $5.47 billion
Holiday Inn: $5.26 billion
Holiday Garden Inn: $4.93 billion
Residence Inn by Marriott: $4.79 billion
DoubleTree by Hilton: $.4.75 billion
With the exception of IHG Hotels, which publishes its systemwide gross room revenues, hotel groups don’t reveal this information publicly. The data in the Yearbook report is generated using other statistics published by hotel groups.

As the report explains, its rankings are created based on using the statistic of revenue per available room, otherwise known as RevPAR. “If a hotel has 100 rooms and generates room sales of $1 million per year, the RevPAR is approximately $27.40 ($1 million divided by 100 rooms, divided by 365 days),” the report explains.

The 2023 Big Book of Travel Data represents the second annual publication of this new report from Allianz and IdeaWorksCompany.com. The report provides industry data for airlines, hotel groups, car rental companies, and online travel agencies.

Overall, the report indicates that the travel industry as a whole is experiencing significant recovery from the COVID-19-era slump. This is indicated through such figures in the report as overall industry revenue, which reached $1.28 trillion in 2022 for airlines, hotels, car rentals, and OTAs.

“By every measure, ours is a travel industry in rapid recovery from the ravages of the pandemic. The data shows that airlines, hotels and other travel providers last year leapt from the pandemic plunge of 2020,” says the report.
