Trip.com Group and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) have unveiled a comprehensive report at ITB Berlin, identifying 16 technologies set to reshape the travel and tourism industry. Titled “Technology Game Changers: Future Trends in Travel & Tourism,” the report categorizes these innovations into four key areas: digital technologies, financial technologies, future mobility, and breakthrough innovations, forecasting their impact over the next decade and beyond.

The report predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will become a ubiquitous element across all facets of society, fundamentally integrated into both internal operations and customer-facing applications of travel companies. It suggests that AI’s integration will advance to the extent of developing predictive models capable of anticipating travelers’ needs before they themselves are aware of them.

Highlighting another significant trend, the report discusses the potential expansion of super apps—platforms that amalgamate various services like communication, ride-hailing, food ordering, and financial transactions. While prevalent in Asia, their adaptability in Western markets has been uncertain. However, the study posits that super apps could evolve to become interoperable and regionally integrated, potentially transforming the booking experience and enhancing travel convenience across international borders.

Boon Sian Chai, Trip.com Group’s Managing Director and Vice President of International Markets, emphasized the importance of a strategic approach to AI, advocating for its role as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human interaction. Meanwhile, Julia Simpson, CEO of WTTC, highlighted the growing significance of super apps in travel, suggesting they could soon offer more comprehensive services like “buy now, pay later” options, thus promoting higher spending and enriching travel experiences.

Looking forward, the report envisions a future where super apps not only facilitate access to a variety of travel services across different stages of the journey but also interact directly with internet-enabled devices within hotel rooms or at tourism venues, offering highly personalized services.

In addition to AI and super apps, the study also explores other pioneering technologies such as smart cities, quantum computing, and nuclear fusion, underlining their potential to revolutionize travel and urban living.
