Trump Secures Boeing Jet Deal in Indonesia Trade Pact
Former US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping new trade agreement with Indonesia that includes the purchase of 50 Boeing aircraft and billions in American exports. The announcement came via Trump’s post on Truth Social on July 15, 2025, following a phone call with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
Trump described the deal as historic, claiming it will grant the United States full access to Indonesia’s market of over 280 million people for the first time. The agreement includes the sale of $15 billion in US energy, $4.5 billion in agricultural products, and 50 Boeing jets, many of which are widebody 777 models.
As part of the pact, Trump stated that Indonesia will impose a 19% tariff on all goods it exports to the United States, while American exports to Indonesia will face no tariffs or non-tariff barriers. He also emphasized a clause aimed at preventing tariff evasion through transshipment, stating that goods entering the US via Indonesia from higher-tariff countries will be taxed at the higher rate.
President Subianto confirmed the deal to the Jakarta Globe, citing the urgent need for Garuda Indonesia to upgrade its aging fleet. He said the new aircraft would support the growth and competitiveness of the national airline. While Boeing will be the primary supplier under this agreement, Subianto clarified that Indonesia will continue operating Airbus aircraft as well, stating that both manufacturers serve the country’s aviation needs.
In a follow-up post on Instagram, Subianto praised the outcome of his conversation with Trump, highlighting a shared commitment to elevating bilateral trade into a new era of mutual benefit. Trump echoed the sentiment, thanking Indonesia for its friendship and its role in reducing the US trade deficit.
The deal marks a significant step in rebalancing trade relations between the two nations and signals renewed momentum for US aerospace exports. If executed as planned, it could boost Boeing’s production pipeline at a time when the company is focused on recovery and expansion.
While the agreement is being welcomed by US businesses eager to tap into Indonesia’s growing economy, trade analysts are watching closely to see how the terms are implemented and whether the proposed tariff structures and market access provisions hold in practice.
