The United States Air Force (USAF) has initiated a search for a new contractor to operate and maintain its fleet of passenger-configured Boeing 737-600s, famously known as “Janet.” The request for information (RFI), issued on November 7, 2023, outlines the requirements for a ten-year contract, encompassing transportation operations from various locations, including both commercial airfields and highly secure government-controlled sites, out of Las Vegas Harry Reid.

The Janet 737-600 fleet, consisting of six aircraft, is integral to the USAF’s mission, facilitating the transport of personnel, contractors, and Department of Defense employees. The fleet, operated by the current contractor Amentum, is a crucial element in connecting points within the continental United States. The flights often link Las Vegas to nearby Special Access Program Facilities, including the Nevada Test and Training Range.

The RFI emphasizes the critical nature of the operation, describing it as a “no-fail” mission. Prospective bidders must be Part 121 certificated carriers and Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) members. The successful bidder will be required to operate up to 200 flights per week, ensuring aircraft availability around the clock.

The Janet 737-600s include N869HH, N859WP, N365SR, N319BD, N288DP, and N273RH. Additionally, the RFI outlines the operation and support requirements for the Beechcraft King Airs based at Las Vegas Harry Reid.

The USAF plans to host industry briefing days on December 14 and 15 to provide more information to potential bidders. The contract, slated to commence on October 1, 2025, may involve a fleet replacement program, with the contractor supporting the analysis and inspection of potential replacement aircraft.

As the USAF seeks a new operator for the iconic Janet fleet, the procurement process will play a crucial role in maintaining the security, reliability, and efficiency of this strategic transportation mission. Stay tuned for updates as the selection process unfolds in the coming months.
