UK Requires ETA Visas for U.S. Travelers Starting This Week

Starting Wednesday, travelers from the U.S., Canada, and over three dozen other countries will be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before flying to the U.K. The new rule, which will be implemented this week, applies to all visitors from countries where the U.K. does not currently require a visa. The application process is simple and costs £10 (about $12.50), and it will be valid for two years, allowing stays of up to six months.

What is an ETA?
The ETA is a pre-authorization required for travelers who don’t need a visa to enter the U.K. Initially launched in 2024 for citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, the program will expand to include citizens from numerous other countries starting this week. This is similar to the U.S. digital travel authorization system, which requires visitors from the European Union, the U.K., and other countries to obtain an ESTA before entering the U.S.

Even with an ETA, travelers will still need to clear immigration upon arrival in the U.K. However, travelers holding a valid visa for the U.K. do not need an ETA, as they are already authorized to live, work, or study there.

How to Apply for the ETA
Travelers can apply for the ETA online using the official app, available for both Android and iPhone devices. To apply, applicants must upload a passport photo and a selfie. Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years, and travelers can use it for visits of up to six months. The application process is straightforward, and payment is made by credit card.

Processing Time
After submitting the application, travelers should expect to wait around three days for approval, which will be communicated via email.

Are Children Affected?
Yes, the new rule applies to everyone traveling to the U.K., including babies and children. Each individual, regardless of age, must have their own ETA.

What About Connecting Flights?
Travelers passing through the U.K. on their way to another country will also need an ETA, even if they are not leaving the airport.

In summary, U.S. citizens and other travelers from eligible countries must apply for the ETA before their trip to the U.K. Starting Wednesday, this new requirement will be mandatory for a smooth and efficient journey.
