United Airlines Signs Lease Agreement with BOC Aviation for New 737 and 787 Aircraft
United Airlines has signed a lease agreement with BOC Aviation for the acquisition of three Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets and one Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The announcement was made on October 7, 2024, by BOC Aviation, which confirmed that the aircraft have already joined the United Airlines fleet.
According to BOC Aviation, the three Boeing 737 MAX 9s are powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, while the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is equipped with General Electric GEnx engines. Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, “We are delighted to be supporting our long-time customer, United, once again, as it continues its fleet renewal programme.”
Currently, United Airlines operates 78 Boeing 737 MAX 9s and 36 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners within a fleet exceeding 850 aircraft, as reported by ch-aviation. BOC Aviation itself manages a fleet of over 600 aircraft and maintains lease agreements with 93 airlines across 47 countries.
In related news, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently completed a six-month review of United Airlines following several high-profile safety incidents. Announced in March 2024, the review aimed to ensure compliance with safety regulations, hazard identification, risk mitigation, and effective safety management.
The FAA concluded its evaluation without identifying any significant safety issues, stating, “The review did not identify any significant safety issues. The FAA has concluded the enhanced oversight and approval process for United to add aircraft and services.” This clearance underscores United Airlines’ commitment to maintaining high safety standards as it expands its fleet.
