United Airlines to Change Boarding Process for Faster and Smoother Experience

United Airlines, one of the major carriers in the United States, is set to introduce a revamped boarding process known as “WILMA” starting on October 26, 2023. This new boarding procedure aims to enhance efficiency, reduce congestion, and provide passengers with a smoother experience.

According to an internal memo acquired by Best Life, United Airlines claims that the “WILMA” process can save up to two minutes of boarding time compared to the current method, which follows a back-to-front boarding sequence. The memo also indicates that customer satisfaction scores for the revised boarding process exceeded those of the existing system.

The revised boarding process will consist of seven groups. Preboarding and groups one to three will remain unchanged. However, there are significant changes for groups four and five. Group four will now be designated for passengers seated in middle seats, prioritizing their boarding. Group five, on the other hand, will include passengers seated in aisle seats only. Additionally, a new group, group six, will be introduced specifically for basic economy customers who do not have full-size carry-on bags. This category will be available on select flights.

This alteration is part of United Airlines’ ongoing modernization initiative, focused on enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and the overall passenger experience, particularly at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This effort includes the introduction of the Terminal 3-Tom Bradley International Terminal connector, facilitating seamless movement between all eight terminals without the need for passengers to undergo security screening again.

United Airlines anticipates that the implementation of the new boarding process will contribute to greater convenience and satisfaction for its travelers. The airline rigorously tested the revised procedure at one of its hubs and four domestic outstations before its nationwide rollout.

The “WILMA” boarding process reflects United Airlines’ commitment to adapting and innovating to meet the evolving needs and expectations of its passengers, ultimately striving to make air travel a more enjoyable and efficient experience for all.
