UPS keeps jets flying with computer upgrade

UPS is extending the lifespan of 52 Airbus A300-600 jets by replacing their cockpit computers, allowing them to store more navigational mapping data, as well as providing a central maintenance system and improved weather radar. “This is a huge productivity improvement for us,” said UPS engineering executive Ed Walton, adding, “We had a 1970s-generation flight management system that only had 200K of memory.”
