UPS to Launch Groundbreaking Automated Cargo Hub at Hong Kong International Airport
(UPS) is on the brink of a significant expansion in Asia, with plans to build an innovative automated cargo hub at Hong Kong International Airport. This ambitious project, expected to be completed by 2028, represents a major milestone in air cargo operations. The hub will serve as UPS Hong Kong’s primary facility for processing and sorting imports, exports, and transshipments to and from Europe, the United States, and other parts of Asia.
With a capacity to handle nearly a million tons of express freight annually, the new hub will significantly enhance UPS’s presence at one of the world’s leading air cargo hubs. Spanning approximately 20,000 square meters, the facility promises to streamline operations and boost efficiency, offering direct airside access for easy aircraft handling. This development aligns with Hong Kong International Airport’s ongoing efforts to cement its position as a global air cargo and e-commerce fulfillment hub.
Daryl Tay, President of UPS North Asia District, emphasized the strategic importance of Hong Kong in UPS’s global network, noting that the new hub is a testament to the company’s continued commitment to Asia. This facility is expected to provide UPS with enhanced capabilities to meet the growing demands of global trade and e-commerce, furthering the company’s competitiveness in the rapidly evolving logistics industry.
Hong Kong International Airport, which handled 4.2 million tons of cargo in 2022, has several major air cargo projects underway, including this latest addition from UPS. The airport’s three-runway system is expected to handle an annual cargo volume of 10 million tons when fully operational. The new UPS hub will play a crucial role in attracting new customers and providing ample capacity for existing operators to expand in the future.
