US Airlines Issue Ultimatum Over Dublin Airport’s Passenger Cap

Airlines for America (A4A), representing major US carriers including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines, has issued a stark warning that its member airlines may cease operations at Dublin International unless the airport’s current 32 million annual passenger cap is increased. The industry group, which also counts cargo giants FedEx Express and UPS Airlines among its members, has emphasized the critical economic implications of failing to meet the US-Ireland passenger demand.

In a submission to Fingal County Council, which is deliberating on whether to expand the cap, A4A highlighted the substantial economic contribution of US companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Google to Ireland, accounting for one-third of the country’s corporation tax. The group argued that raising the passenger limit is essential for sustaining and boosting US tourism and foreign direct investment in Ireland. A4A pointed to a significant 76% growth in passenger traffic between the US and Ireland from 2013 to 2023, with expectations of continued growth in the coming years.

As of the week starting February 26, 2024, Delta Air Lines leads the US carriers in capacity at Dublin International, offering 4,690 seats, which represents 1.42% of the airport’s total capacity. American Airlines follows closely, with 3,276 passengers, accounting for 0.99%. Meanwhile, local airlines Ryanair and Aer Lingus dominate the airport, contributing to approximately 75% of its capacity.

The call for an increase in Dublin Airport’s passenger cap resonates with similar concerns raised by Ryanair and Aer Lingus, emphasizing the broader industry’s push for expansion. The current cap aims to mitigate local infrastructure strain and reduce carbon and noise pollution. However, airlines and the airport’s administrator, daa, are advocating for an increase to 40 million passengers per year to accommodate growing demand. Fingal City Council has requested daa to provide additional documentation to support the need for expansion.

In 2023, Dublin Airport welcomed 31.9 million passengers, marking a 60% increase over the past decade, as reported by daa. The potential departure of major US carriers from Dublin International underscores the urgent need for a resolution that balances operational capacity with environmental and community concerns, to maintain Ireland’s vital economic links with the United States.
