The Václav Havel Airport Prague has embarked on an ambitious and extensive development plan, which outlines a long-term vision and strategy for the airport’s growth and improvement. The plan, approved by the Czech Finance Ministry in October 2023, aims to enhance the airport’s capacity, connectivity, competitiveness, and overall quality of service. Here are the key features of the development plan:

The development plan spans the period from 2023 to 2050, with a phased approach. The first phase, expected to be completed by 2030, focuses on expanding Terminal 2 (for Schengen area flights), adding new infrastructure, and improving amenities. Subsequent phases include building a new parallel runway and Terminal 3 (for non-Schengen area flights) and further modernization and expansion.

The plan seeks to significantly increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity. Starting at 17 million passengers in 2022, the goal is to reach 21.2 million passengers by 2030 and eventually grow to accommodate 30 million passengers by 2050. The plan also aims to double the peak hourly capacity from 24 to 48 aircraft movements by 2030, increasing further to 72 aircraft movements by 2050.

Improved connectivity is a key objective, with plans to expand the number of destinations served by the airport. The goal is to increase the number of destinations from 160 in 2022 to 200 by 2030 and further to 250 by 2050. Additionally, the plan targets an increase in long-haul routes, from 21 in 2022 to 37 by 2030 and 50 by 2050. Enhanced codeshare agreements with airlines, particularly Delta Air Lines, are also planned.

Passengers, airlines, and stakeholders will benefit from enhanced facilities and services at the airport. This includes additional parking spaces, expanded retail areas, increased hotel capacity, improved lounge facilities, and other passenger amenities. The plan also addresses security measures, baggage handling, check-in processes, boarding procedures, and transfers. Integration with various modes of transport, including trains, buses, taxis, and car rentals, is also planned.

The development plan underscores a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Investments will be made in climate protection measures, such as the use of renewable energy sources, expansion of electric mobility, and efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, the plan aims to stimulate economic and social development in the region by creating jobs, attracting investments, and boosting tourism and trade.

In summary, the development plan for Václav Havel Airport Prague is a comprehensive and forward-looking initiative aimed at transforming the airport into a modern and competitive hub in Central Europe. It encompasses capacity expansion, improved connectivity, enhanced passenger services, sustainability measures, and broader economic benefits for the region and the country.
