Venice, facing the challenges of overtourism, is introducing a new system where day trippers will need to purchase entry tickets. This measure, effective from April 25, aims to regulate the influx of tourists and preserve the city’s charm and heritage.

Ticket Details and Purchase

  • Cost: Tickets are priced at 5 euros (about $5.45).
  • Purchasing Tickets: Tickets must be bought for each person and each day of visit. They can be purchased through Venice’s newly launched online platform.
  • Exemptions: Visitors with overnight accommodations in Venice are exempt but must obtain an exemption in advance. Minors under 14 are also exempt.

Ticket Requirement Dates

Entry tickets are required on specific peak season dates:

  • April 25-30
  • May 1-5, 11-12, 18-19, 25-26
  • June 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, 29-30
  • July 6-7, 13-14

Ticket Usage and Validity

  • Ticket Format: Upon purchase, tickets are emailed and can be printed or saved on your phone.
  • Time Restrictions: Tickets are necessary from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visits between 4:00 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. do not require a ticket.
  • Cancellation Policy: Tickets can be canceled until 11:59 p.m. the night before the scheduled visit.

Additional Exemptions and Considerations

  • Hotel Guests: Exemptions apply from check-in day until departure.
  • Venice’s Lagoon Islands: Visitors to islands like Murano, Burano, and Lido don’t need tickets. However, if passing through Venice to reach these islands, a ticket is required.
  • Documentation: Proof of age may be required for children’s exemptions.

By implementing this ticket system, Venice is taking a significant step toward sustainable tourism. Visitors can now contribute to the preservation of this unique city while enjoying its unparalleled beauty and rich history. For a smooth visit, ensure to check the specific dates, purchase tickets in advance, and understand the exemption criteria.
