West Maui Set to Reopen to Tourism on October 8 with Support from Signature Travel Network Owners

West Maui, the region that endured devastating wildfires in August, is poised to welcome back tourists on October 8, as confirmed by Hawaii Governor Josh Green. The decision follows consultations with local stakeholders who concurred that reopening would contribute significantly to the island’s recovery and economic resurgence.

The impending reopening signifies the end of travel restrictions that had been in place since the wildfires, which tragically claimed the lives of at least 115 people and razed over 2,200 structures in Lahaina and its environs. While most of West Maui will be accessible to visitors, the burn zone, where recovery efforts continue, will remain restricted.

Governor Green emphasized the importance of visitors respecting the local community, culture, and adhering to health and safety protocols to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. He also encouraged tourists to show support for local businesses and attractions affected by the disaster.

A prominent supporter of Maui’s recovery is Signature Travel Network, a cooperative of travel agencies that recently hosted its annual Owners’ Meeting in South Maui from September 6 to 9. This event, attended by approximately 425 individuals, had ambitious goals, including raising $400,000 in donations, delivering 10,000 pounds of supplies, and participating in a day of service for the island.

Alex Sharpe, CEO and President of Signature Travel Network, underscored the meeting’s significance in expressing solidarity and gratitude to Maui, a cherished destination for their customers over the decades. The event also provided attendees with firsthand insights into the island’s situation, enabling travel agents to assist their clients in planning responsible and meaningful trips to Maui.

Sharpe expressed hope that Signature’s efforts would inspire more travelers to visit Maui and contribute to its recovery. He lauded Maui’s beauty, resilience, natural wonders, cultural heritage, hospitality, and aloha spirit, all of which continue to make it an attractive and worthwhile destination.
