Wizz Air to Resume Services to Moldova, Eases Safety Concerns with Limited Network

Wizz Air (W6), the Budapest-based low-cost carrier, has announced plans to resume services to Chisinau, the sole commercial airport in Moldova, starting December 14, 2023. The decision comes after the airline temporarily halted its operations to the country in March due to safety concerns.

Initially, Wizz Air will operate a limited network to Chisinau, featuring flights from London Luton (3x weekly), Rome Fiumicino, and Milan Malpensa (2x weekly each). This phased approach reflects the airline’s cautious re-entry into the Moldovan market.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed optimism about Wizz Air’s return, highlighting the positive impact on international connections and economic development for Moldova. The resumption of services follows concerted efforts to address safety concerns and enhance travel opportunities for citizens.

Wizz Air had previously relocated its base from Chisinau to Iasi in Romania amid the heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moldova, situated near Ukraine and with a substantial Russian military presence in the breakaway region of Transnistria, was perceived to be at risk of political instability. Despite Moldova’s pro-European stance and the absence of significant security incidents, Wizz Air took precautionary measures, permanently closing its Chisinau base in December 2022 and discontinuing all flights to Moldova three months later.

The airline’s decision to resume services signals a degree of confidence in the safety and stability of the region. As Wizz Air re-establishes its presence in Moldova, travelers can anticipate improved connectivity and travel options, contributing to the economic development of the country.
