Xejet Launches Premium Economy on Lagos-Abuja Route
Xejet, a Nigerian airline based in Lagos, has expanded its offerings with a new premium economy product on the popular Lagos-Abuja route. CEO Emmanuel Iza confirmed that the airline is wet-leasing an Embraer E190 from Ukraine’s Windrose Airlines to facilitate this service, marking a significant move to cater to a broader customer base. The wet-lease agreement with Windrose Airlines is set to operate under an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) contract, initially planned for a three-month period.
This addition to Xejet’s fleet aligns with the airline’s strategy to appeal to a diverse range of travelers. Branded as “Xejet Express,” the premium economy product aims to provide a balance between comfort and exclusivity, filling a niche in the market for passengers who seek an upgraded experience without the full cost of a business class seat.
Xejet’s current fleet primarily comprises two 24-seater CRJ200 aircraft configured exclusively for business class, which also serve the Lagos-Abuja route. With the introduction of the E190, the airline now offers a more varied seating option, attracting travelers who desire a middle ground between business and economy class.
In addition to its new premium economy service, Xejet has been expanding its operational scope. The airline added scheduled services to its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) earlier in 2023, having initially certified for non-scheduled charter operations in 2022. This shift reflects Xejet’s intent to establish a solid presence in both scheduled and charter markets, diversifying its offerings to attract a wider customer base.
Beyond its core Nigerian operations, Xejet is extending its reach into West Africa. The airline’s fleet also includes three Embraer E145s, with plans to add another soon. One of these, a 50-seater registered as 5N-BZZ, is set to support Xejet’s subsidiary, Air Sierra Leone (ASL). The aircraft is currently in Johannesburg for repainting in ASL’s colors following maintenance in Mbombela. This move supports ASL’s upcoming launch of a Freetown-London Gatwick route in December, which will operate with a Boeing 737-8 chartered from Ascend Airways. ASL’s London services mark a significant milestone as it awaits certification from the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority.
Through these developments, Xejet and its subsidiary Air Sierra Leone are strategically positioning themselves as key players in West African aviation, offering enhanced services and routes that appeal to both business and leisure travelers.
